Digital loyalty card: the guide for local shops

A digital loyalty card is a stamp or points card that lives in your customers’ phone, in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, instead of a piece of card. They scan a QR code, the card is added in two taps, and there is no app to install.

What is a digital loyalty card?

It is a loyalty card that no longer exists on paper. Each customer keeps theirs in the Wallet of their phone, next to their boarding passes and tickets. At every visit you add a stamp or points by scanning the card, and the customer’s screen lights up to tell them.

You will meet several names for the same idea: digital, electronic or paperless loyalty card. In every case the paper disappears. What really differs is where the card lives: inside an app the customer has to install, or directly in the phone’s Wallet.

Why paper cards do not last

There is probably a drawer of forgotten cards behind your till. Your customer has four stamped cards at the bottom of a bag and never the right one on them. The same four frictions show up in every kind of shop:

  • It is forgotten. The customer comes in, the card stayed at home, the stamp is lost. Next time they stop bothering.
  • It is lost or worn out. A card carried in a pocket does not survive the months, and neither does the wish to start again from zero.
  • It tells you nothing. You do not know who comes back, who is drifting away, or what brings them back.
  • It cannot be nudged. You cannot tell a regular they are one stamp from their reward, nor call back someone you have not seen for weeks.

The paper card has its charm: the little stamp, the pride of filling it. A digital card keeps that pleasure and removes what spoils it.

How a digital loyalty card works

For the customer it takes seconds. For you, a few minutes of setup.

  1. You create the card. Logo, colours, stamps, reward: start from a model, then make it yours.
  2. The customer scans the QR code. It sits near the till and opens with the phone camera. The customer gives a first name and a phone number once.
  3. The card lands in their Wallet. Apple Wallet on iPhone, Google Wallet on Android, in two taps.
  4. One visit, one stamp. You scan the customer’s card with a phone, the stamp drops, and a notification appears on their lock screen.
  5. At the reward, the card says so. The customer shows it, you validate it, and a new cycle starts.

Nothing to plug into the till and no hardware to buy: Fidz works alongside any checkout, with an ordinary phone to scan.

Stamps or points?

A stamp card is the simplest: one visit, one stamp, and a reward after eight or ten. It suits a steady basket such as a coffee, a croissant or a haircut. A points card rewards the amount spent instead: it fits shops where the basket varies, such as a restaurant, a wine shop or a cheese shop, with milestones and a bonus for large baskets. Both are available on every Fidz plan.

What Fidz gives you

Fidz is a digital loyalty card service built for local shops. In practice:

  • Stamp or points cards in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet, in your colours, with 15 trade-specific models to start from.
  • Unlimited customers, with no fee per customer or per message.
  • Notifications for stamps and rewards on the lock screen.
  • Automated win-back messages for customers who drift away, birthday messages and a Google review request when the reward is earned (Growth plan).
  • Team and anti-fraud tools: a cap on stamps per scan, a delay between two scans, optional approval by the owner, and a history of who did what.
  • A dashboard showing who comes back, who drifts away and what your messages bring. Your data stays yours and can be exported as CSV.

Every kind of shop has its own page with an example card and reward ideas: bakery, café, barber, beauty salon, florist and all the others.

Set up in ten minutes

Getting started takes four steps, and e-mail help is included if you get stuck.

  1. Pick a model close to your shop, then put it in your colours.
  2. Set the reward: for example ten visits and one free, or points per euro spent.
  3. Print the QR poster (A4 file provided) and put it near the till.
  4. Show the team: scanning a card takes a few seconds, with any phone.

The first customer can sign up the same day.

Limits worth knowing

A Wallet card relies on the phone. A customer without a recent smartphone cannot use it: if part of your clientele is in that case, keep a paper option for them and let the others move to the Wallet. There is no free plan: the trial lasts 14 days, then the subscription starts. Finally, messages sent to all your customers (broadcasts) belong to the Growth and Multi-site plans; the Solo plan sends the stamp and reward notifications.

Which shops is it for?

A digital loyalty card suits any shop where people come back regularly: bakeries and pastry shops, cafés, restaurants, pizzerias and street food, barbers and beauty salons, florists, wine and cheese shops, bookshops, dog groomers, yoga studios. If your customers come back, the card makes sense. Pick your trade on the shops page to see a matching example.
